Ntombazana is the story of a young elephant destined to become the matriarch of her herd. Set in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa the herd follows the rhythm of the seasons. In these migrations Ntombi's herd encounters many of Africa's animals and some of its people. It is the encroachment of people that eventually brings their near idyllic life to an end. Survival now depends upon the accumulated wisdom of the leaders of the herd.
Elephant behavior, natural history, Zulu tribal legends and folklore are the fabric of Books 1 and 2. Book 3 enters the inner world of the elephant in which it must use all of its senses to survive.
In introducing each Book with a letter to his grandchildren, the author draws broad parallels between the life of his family and that of the elephant herd.
