From the Introduction: This book is a collection of texts. At its most basic level, a text is a unit of meaning. For our purposes, a text is something that can be read or interpreted. A poem is a text. A short story is a text. A play is a text...you get the idea. Insofar as you can "read" (that is, decode the meaning of) a painting, a film, a television commercial, an advertisement or a billboard, they are texts also.
