The Grays Thurrock area of south-west Essex has been described as Forgotten Thameside. For this book, Brian Evans has chosen over 200 old photographs that reveal the character of both the industrial riverside and the rural hinterland, building up a vivid visual impression of the area from Victorian times to the 1930s. Views of the street and building are juxtaposed with images of people to create a fascinating record, not only of the physical development of Grays, but also of changes in costume and custom, transport, trading and entertainment. Photographs are included that illustrate the area's role in the First World War, industrial history and Grays beach, among many other subjects. "Aroudn Grays" will evoke nostalgic memories for many, and will give pleasure to everyone who knows the area.
