This report is based on the inspection by HMI of 310 secondary, 330 primary and 28 special schools. The main findings suggest that while there have been improvements since the previous review in 1990-91, much of the Design and Technology work was undemanding and standards were low. Although the great majority of teachers continued to work hard to implement National Curriculum technology, in many schools planning for each Key Stage lacked coherence, with inadequate coverage of the Programmes of Study in both Design and Technology and Information Technology. The report notes that in both Design and Technology and Information Technology there is an urgent need for a sustained and systematic programme of INSET for teachers. This report is intended for teachers of science and their headteachers and inspectors.
