Why Marriage?: The history shaping today's debate over gay equality

Book Description: Introduction from the Author Nestled in the rolling hills of Athens, Ohio, deep in Appalachian country, Ohio University might not sound that appealing to those who are considering Big Ten schools or universities based in bustling cities. But to the surprise of many, the campus has a lot to offer, both academically and socially. OU is nationally-recognized for its academics and caters to students from all over the world. The campus is gorgeous, epitomizing the quintessential college atmosphere with its brick streets and buildings and inviting greens shaded by giant Sycamores. For many students, it is the winning combination of these two attributes that makes them want to head to Athens for four (or more) years. The prestige of its journalism school is what initially attracted me to OU (it is ranked among the top 10 in the nation). Still unsure of where my path might lead, I visited the University, and as soon as I set foot on the campus, I was hooked and couldn’t imagine myself going anywhere else. Despite the freezing rain and snow that plagued my visit, I was still drawn to the beauty of the campus, and how it was so similar to what I had envisioned a college to be. Many other students admit that their decision also was made after setting eyes on the local scenery. And while Athens may not be a huge city, overflowing with people, it’s not so small that you know everyone you lay eyes on; while walking to class or at a party, you’ll always see a few familiar faces. It really is the ideal size, maintaining the comforting feel of a small college while not being claustrophobic or boring. Academics are another strength of the University, and although OU is growing at a steady pace, it is still focuses on giving all students a challenging education and sending them off into the world as well-rounded individuals. While entry-level classes can be large, there are many opportunities for students to meet with professors and TAs for personalized assistance, and the majority of upper-level classes have fewer than 25 students, ensuring that lectures are personalized to the classes’ needs. Not to mention, OU boasts nationally-ranked and award-winning schools and programs, as well as faculty and staff who are recognized leaders in their fields. There’s no doubt that OU holds its ground in academia. OU students and alumni have a lot of pride in their school. Many students go the whole spring without makingh trips back home on the weekend because they have become so attached to their school, while alumni from all over the country can be found in Court Street bars raising a glass to their beloved alma mater. Whether you join this group is a big decision, requiring a lot of thought and research. Hopefully, this book will answer many questions you might have about OU and what it’s like being a Bobcat. Good luck with your college exploration and the next phase of your life! Jessica Cyr, Author Ohio University
