In preparation of this report over 20 syllabuses were considered, involving well over half a million entries covering English, mathematics, science, technology, history and French. HMI found that many candidates achieved satisfactory standards overall, showing generally appropriate performance for the grade awarded. Within this, however, candidates' work showed a pattern of uneven attainment across the range of syllabus objectives. Although standards were satisfactory or good in some aspects of syllabuses, they were relatively weak in other important requirements.
