In the autumn term 1992 HMI visited 88 English primary schools to inspect the work in 141 reception classes. Spread across 41 local education authorities, about half the schools served areas with moderate to severe degrees of social and economic disadvantage. The inspectors were encouraged that the findings of their survey show that about 80 per cent of what was seen was satisfactory or better and the best work of the reception classes was very good indeed. They note that the advent of the National Curriculum has often forced schools to address the educational needs of this age group more urgently and intensively than ever before.
