This report draws on a visit made by HMI to primary schools in the region of Tuscany. The main purposes of the visit were: to examine the quality of teaching and learning, including the grouping practices and teaching techniques used in Italian primary schools; to assess the influence of the nationally prescribed teaching programmes for primary schools; to examine the place of separate subjects, including a modern foreign language, in the primary school curriculum; and to examine how schools are organized and explore aspects of the training of teachers.
