The Arctic Guide is a handbook for travelers to the Far North. It includes the history, geography and natural history of the entire Arctic. An introduction to Arctic exploration includes biographies of famous historical figures. There are area studies of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, the Canadian Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, Svalbard, the Russian Arctic and Russian Far East with topographical maps and black-and-white photos. The physical science section outlines the dynamics of the Arctic Ocean, earthquakes and volcanos, ice on sea and land, and includes a star chart of the boreal skies. There are detailed regional checklists of Arctic birds and mammals, with many of the common species pictured. The appendix includes a geological time scale, the latitude and longitude of Arctic places, conversion charts and an extensive bibliography.
