Unfortunately, the financial crisis faced by millions of students is continuing to grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the PwC Employee Wellness Survey, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.employeebenefitadviser.com\/opinion\/student-loan-anxiety-taking-a-toll-on-the-workplace\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">42 percent of millennial employees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have student loan debt. Twenty-six percent of Gen-X employees have student debt, as well as 11 percent of baby boomer employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Total Student Debt in the U.S.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2076 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.campusbooks.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/570258715-1-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"437\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.campusbooks.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/570258715-1-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.campusbooks.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/570258715-1.jpg 543w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 437px) 100vw, 437px\" \/>First of all, the state of\u00a0student loan debt isn&#8217;t getting better. These figures continue to rise each year in the U.S. In fact, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported that 44 million Americans hold <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2017\/03\/01\/half-of-americas-college-students-believe-the-federal-government-will-forgive-their-loans\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a debt that has hit $1.31 trillion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not quite sure how to comprehend that number? The total outstanding balance on American credit cards is just $779 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps, this might put things in perspective: The entire economy of Russia is only slightly larger than the U.S. student loan debt, with their gross domestic product coming in at $1.33 trillion annually.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>It&#8217;s VERY Unlikely That a Loan Is Forgiven<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s a common misunderstanding among students that their student loans will be forgiven. We want to be clear that this is VERY unlikely. One more time: It&#8217;s extremely unlikely that your student loan debt will be forgiven, in part or in its entirety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reality, only 10 percent of people will see any portion of their student loans forgiven. To qualify for forgiveness, you must fit into a few narrow categories. Those are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a public service job for a long period of time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teach in an underserved school district.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attend a college that closes while you&#8217;re in attendance or shortly after you graduate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Become permanently disabled.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Die.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those are all the options. That&#8217;s it. Hence, if you don&#8217;t fit into these categories, your student loan debt won&#8217;t be forgiven.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Fees, Fees, and More Fees<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-2064 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.campusbooks.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/96783877-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"439\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.campusbooks.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/96783877-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.campusbooks.com\/blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/96783877.jpg 477w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes are afoot in the U.S. Department of Education. The Trump administration has rescinded an Obama-era rule that forbade debt collectors from charging collection fees from defaulted borrowers if they begin paying within 60 days of defaulting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For students who miss several payments in a row, debt collectors can charge fees <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wtsp.com\/money\/magnify-money\/watch-out-for-this-16-percent-student-loan-fee\/424770103\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as high as 16 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, these fees are levied against the entire outstanding loan balance and interest charges.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Happens If I Default on My Federal Student Loans?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;re not alone in asking this question. In 2016, 1.1 million federal student loans were in default according to the U.S. Department of Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A federal student loan goes into default after 270 days of missed payments. The consequences of that are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire balance of the loan is immediately due.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You lose eligibility for deferment, forbearance, and flexible repayment plans.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could face a loss of credit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your wages and tax refunds can be used for repayment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re periodically missing payments or have concerns:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact your loan provider as soon as you know there&#8217;s a problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can ask for a forbearance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out if you&#8217;re eligible for a flexible repayment plan.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re already in default:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask for loan rehabilitation from your loan provider.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have your default status lifted by making nine on-time payments within 10 months.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking on student loan debt and figuring out how to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusbooks.com\/blog\/start-thinking-about-paying-off-debts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repay that debt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are major choices that should take time and thoughtfulness to make.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student loan debt is no secret to the American public.
