Seller Comments: 197 Pages Indexed. Dust jacket has unclipped price $16.95. George Kirksey of Texas was born in 1904 and died in france in 1967. In the years in between he was a familiar figure in the vineyards of France and the racetracks of California. He frequented Hong Kong honky-tonks and Bavarian gardens. He took taxis in Moscow and tour buses in Norway. What he really did was birng baseball to Houston. And baseball in Houston meant getting the major leagues to agree to expansion, then playing the national pastime indoors, of all things, and on artificial grass. He was an enigma walking around in fancy clothes sans socks, cursed in life and mourned in death. He was arguably responsible for as many tears and instances of elevated blood pressure as any man alive, maddening and admired, obnoxious and envied --- and successful. This is his story from childhood in North Texas through the golden Era of Sports in the 1930s, the excitement of overseas service in World War II, the struggle to bring major league ball to Houston, and finally into the last years whenthe man led the life of the honored expatriate, tooling around Europe in an expensive sports car and becom;ing connoisseur of old wine and young women. Contents: Gieroge Kirksey, The Complicated Kirksey, The Early Years, The Glamour Years, The War Years, The Baseball Years, The Great Racer, a Dream Lost, The Good Life, and The Legacy. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. Availability: Ships 2-3 days |
