Seller Comments: Seminal political philosopher and historian Russell Kirk places the roots of American order some two thousand years before its eighteenth-century founding. He offers here (now in its fourth edition) an extremely learned yet lucidly written rendering of the origins of the American political and social polity. The major epochs of political evolution are well outlined--ancient Hebrew, Greek, Roman, early and medieval Christian, Reformation--followed by a detailed examination of the American experiment and the appropriation by the Founders of their ancient predecessors' ideas and achievements. All this is done within the framework of Kirk's conviction (in step with Simone Weil's The Need for Roots) that ''before a person can live tolerably with himself or with others, he must know order. If we lack order in the soul and order in society, we dwell 'in a land of darkness, as darkness itself, ' the Book of Job puts it; 'and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where light is as darkness. ''' Yet even order can be of a higher kind, of a communal substance which ''declares the diginity of man...founded upon the practical experience of human beings over many centuries, and upon the judgments of men of vision and intellect who have preceded us in time. '' Kirk's study is a reinvigorating force, placing him amidst the ranks of these predecessors by his love of ''the permanent things'' and giving his work that ''peculiar quality of being simultaneously timeless and ever timely, at once transcendent and relevant'' (Forrest McDonald in the foreword).
