Seller Comments: Hardcover in cloth with slipcase. The slipcase shows wear along the edges with light scuff marks (text unaffected). Between 1962 and 1978, Ed Ruscha produced eighteen small artist's books, many of which were self-published in limited runs and are now considered seminal works of conceptual art and photography. THEN & NOW marks Ruscha's first independently created artist's book since 1972, revisiting his iconic approach to documenting Los Angeles streetscapes. One of Ruscha's most celebrated books, Every Building on The Sunset Strip (1966), captured a continuous photographic record of Sunset Boulevard. In 1973, he applied the same technique to Hollywood Boulevard, using a motor-driven Nikon F2 mounted on a tripod in the bed of a pickup truck. Over twelve miles, he systematically photographed both the north and south sides of the street, producing 4,500 black-and-white images. In 2004, Ruscha repeated the process this time using 35mm color-negative film creating a 13,000-image visual archive of Hollywood Boulevard three decades later. The result: a meticulous side-by-side comparison of the boulevard's transformation over time. In THEN & NOW, each spread presents: 1973 North Side (top of the page) alongside its 2004 counterpart; 1973 South Side (bottom of the page, shown upside down) alongside its 2004 counterpart. Ruscha describes the book as "a piece of history. a very democratic, unemotional look at the world." More than a historical document THEN & NOW is a rare visual time capsule and a testament to Ruscha's career-long fascination with the changing urban landscape. Availability: Ships 2-3 days |
