Gray endpapers. Frontispiece photograph. Design and typography by Walter Nikkels. Next to Lazlo Moholy-Nagy Otto Umbehr (Umbo)was the most important photographer at the Bauhaus. He was the first to publish film close ups which became the model of what was deemed the "new seeing." A year later he founded the Berlin picture agency DEPHOT with Simon Guttmann. The agency advanced to become the center of photojournalism in the Weimar Republic. Umbehr's archive was destroyed during an air raid on Berlin in 1943. The research for this work, aimed at reconstructing the work of Umbehr in its main features, took some eight years. The monograph is an important publication contributing to completing the German history of photography. Illustrated with spectacular b/w photographs on glossy paper, and in-text reproductions throughout. Contains descriptive list of one hundred and forty-one full page, and in-text photographs, publication of photos, exhibition history, bibliography and index of names at rear. Text in German.
